Yes the RC dating effectively immediately dismissed a large set of theories like modern forgery, Roger Bacon, Leonardo da Vinci etc (or at least made those theories problematic).

Quote:How big are these chances?

Of course I won't undertake estimating them qualitatively, but given that the VMS is not uniform neither in terms of content nor in the terms of text characteristics, the order of creation and the respective time span is definitely worth investigating.

That's what I have in mind, the professional life, perhaps something like 1.5 professional lives (like father and sons).

This is true, but this just suggests that one should not expect large deviations of the "true" dating from the estimated dating. The flaw is in that (potentially) different objects (quires) are being dated as a single object (book). Like, if during an excavation, you find a book and then you sample different pages for a combined estimation to date the book, that's correct. But if you find a chest and therein you discover a book, a pen and a fan and you sample all of them for a combined estimation of the group of objects, that's entirely flawed because the chest was made 200 years ago when the treasure was buried, and the owner put there a 300 yo book, a 400 yo pen and a 1000 yo fan. Of course this is not directly applicable to the VMS (I agree that drastic age differences between different quires are not supported by non-RC dating methods), but I just want to explain the logic of the methodology. If they decided (and were allowed) to sample each thematic section instead of taking three samples from one and the same section (Herbal), that would have been a better choice, in my opinion.

that is, quantitatively, I mean Doh

The sampling took into account that some pages look physically different from each other (thick vs thin) and that there were (then) two distinctly different handwriting styles. Samples were taken from both sets in both cases.

In the end it turns out that three of Lisa's five hands were represented in the samples.

Folio 8 was included for the single reason that its other half (folio 1) has the ex libris of Jacobus de Tepenec, one of only two datable items in the MS. Should the parchment have a date after his lifetime, the MS would have immediately been 'diagnosed' as a much later (=modern) fake.
