  It would be reasonable, that a cardan grille for such a large text as the VMS contains more words than just two or three, but i dare you:  
  
  take a piece of paper, write at random two or three words on it.
  take a scissor and take the words out, making a nice rectangle or square.
  take a random book (which is handwritten!)
  and put your grille on any page on the book, and try to find exactly two or three words that fit.
  
  ...ok, now after 10 minutes you found them. write them down.
  go to any other random page and do the same.
  
  you will notice after 30 minutes of intense pleasure (...not!) that this system could be 
  placed in the same category as You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. or You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. which are techniques 
  that also could be applied to the Voynich manuscript.
  
  I'll leave you to that, have fun with it ! And nothing more than that.

  For those who haven't seen the Rugg article in Nature (2003), here's a link. I'm mainly posting it so we have a record of the link on the forum, in case anyone wants to look back through the history of Rugg articles.
