He lived from 1205/1223 to 1295/1303. In 1264, Alderotti distilled wine into brandy in Bologna. It can therefore be assumed that the alembic was invented around this time. It is, of course, possible that someone had already worked with it earlier, but there is no direct evidence of this.

So the thing must have been known at least in the Eastern Roman Empire since the first centuries CE.
