That's correct, his biggest problem in his calligraphy analysis is his lack of academical authority. Had TT dozens of years of professional paleography, his findings would be taken on a appeal to authority basis by many without a second thought.
And I'm no less guilty of this, I too take the expert's opinions with fewer grains of salt more often than not
