Oh yes, son, I was there... 49 years ago, back when the VMS wasn't solved.
First came the frequency, then entropy, ... Every year a new metric, even more complex than the last one. I witnessed the infamous npcompl33t and Stolfi debate over "geodesics on Hilbert space", then a couple of posts later "infinite dimensional Hadamard Space ellipses" or some crap that flew over my head.
Nobody took simple substitution seriously. Too many people busy crunching too many numbers, nobody had even seriously tried simple substitution. I know it sounds ridiculous but it's true! Little did we know...
