Among the battery of tests, did you include the standard ones (entropies, distributions...). I also remember you had developed some methods which explored the long range structure of text (I can't find the reference now, I remember you compared the VMS to many different texts). Did you try that too?

Some of them, yes, and I just ran the rest on the scribe's text (real vs scribe, average of 5 runs):

Character entropy h1: 3.88 vs 3.86
Conditional entropy h2: 2.12 vs 2.09, h3: 1.85 vs 1.84
Zipf slope: 1.00 vs 1.00

Word length distribution is close but not right: the scribe makes too many words of 2-3 glyphs and too few of 5-6.

Long range is where it fails. In the real text, neighbouring pages share more vocabulary (0.35 cosine, falling to 0.17 at 100 pages apart) and frequent words come in bursts. The scribe is too uniform (0.29 falling only to 0.19), because it only copies within the page. So there is some drift across pages that my rules don't capture yet. Good catch!

Quick update on the long range thing you asked about, Mauro.

I looked at where the similarity between nearby pages comes from, and it's not a drift in time. If I make the scribe copy from the previous pages it gets worse, the whole curve goes flat. What realy matters is the hand, and the section inside the hand. In the real text, pages of the same hand and section are more alike than in my scribe, and pages of different hands are less alike.

So I changed one thing: the scribe now learns its letter habits seperately for each hand, and for each section within a hand, instead of one table for language A and one for B. With that the curve comes out almost right:

page similarity at distance 1 / 10 / 100
real: 0.35 / 0.26 / 0.17
before: 0.29 / 0.24 / 0.19
now: 0.33 / 0.26 / 0.19

Bursts of frequent words go from 1.51 to 1.59 (real 1.76) and MATTR from 0.60 to 0.62 (real 0.64). It also holds when the scribe learns only from the odd folios and writes the even ones.

Two side effects I didn't expect. Once every hand has its own vocabulary, the scribe needs much less copying from the same page (22% instead of 35%), so part of what looked like copying was just the hand's own words. And I also fixed the word lengths, it was making too many short words, now it follows the real distribution by position in the line.

What is still missing: pages far apart are still a bit too similar (0.19 against 0.17), so there is some diference between parts of the book that hands and sections don't explain. Could be a slow drift, or just that the Davis hands and the sections are too coarse as labels.

Thanks for remarking this, it was a good question.
