I'm not even sure me and the native speaker pronounce "aujourd'hui" the same way, even if he can understand me.
Maybe it's just me, but I could have never got a basic understanding of the sounds of even my own language without specifically studying phonetics. Ask any Italian who never studied phonetics and he'll tell you the language has one 's', one 'z' and five vowels, while it has two, two and seven. Phonetics is hard without the theorethical background.
