My favourite example of this is 'bishop' vs. 'mishap'. But English should probably not be used as a model.

Indeed, I deliberately steered away from the question of 'units of meaning'. I think we both tend to consider the strings of Eva-e as somehow belonging to the previous character. Doing that, quickly leads to an 'alphabet' size in the mid 20-s.

The problem is that there are so many different options to consider that the problem is hard to manage.

There are also no good criteria for judging the suitability of the choices, short of achieving a translation of the text....
