What am I looking at here? Why does it keep morphing into a fully colored picture, even as early as page 2?

Can you explain?

It seems to just be layers superimposed with some kind of negation or difference filter. When you put a odd numbered layer in, it goes back to normal-ish colours for the paper as the negation cancels itself out in most places.
