I think Prof. Stolfi's Chinese theory would objectively work just fine, and the plot around it could make a blockbuster.

My personal favorite would be an alien Voynich theory, I think it would explain everything perfectly. In a universe where the existence of space aliens visiting us in the XV century is an undisputed fact, most people would be like duh, of course it's them. Who else could that be?

The plot twist then would be that it wasn't them at all, but an entity much more mundane and at the same time much more mysterious... (tbc)
