Hello and welcome!

How would you explain LAAFU? I mean, why do certain directional markers tend to appear more often near the beginning of lines and some are almost (but not totally) exclusive to the ends of lines?

Overall this or similar ciphers have been proposed a few times and in principle they could work, why not. I think there have also been proposals that added more directional markers that would move like chess knights over the board, etc.

This is also similar to (or rather a perfect subset of) a scheme I wrote about in this post: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
That scheme has the advantage of being able to approximately encode any symbol of any alphabet or any arbitrary shape, which could be useful for alchemy or astrology.

It shouldn't be hard to devise a  computational attack to crack any specific type of these ciphers, but much harder to attack this general class of ciphers, given a lot of flexibility in rules. Maybe it also could be possible to use existing research on Voynichese grammars, since I think this way of encoding should produce some distinct features in the distribution of actual character sequences in the MS. Maybe @Mauro can comment on this one.

EDIT: I re-read my other post and realized I need to clarify, the scheme in my other post that I'm referring to here is the second one, which was left as an exercise for the reader. Smile It works by drawing the target character by specifying directions rather than cardinal points.
