Although I agree with much of what you say, we can also come up with another paradigm simply by removing the concept of deception - and inserting that of innocence.
It is perfectly reasonable to suggest the scribes were untrained in the Scholastic tradition, or the monastic artistic tradition. They therefore used the cultural heritage they were exposed to, but were not bound by strict rules of interpretation and simply put their own spin on things.
