Latin as a Disguise for the VMS and Graphs
#2
I was going to post a chart of the origin of the VMS glyphs on my blog yesterday (Sunday) but sadly, the amount of time it takes to paste in all the samples I've collected (which is hundreds) was far greater than my free time (I work weekends, but not as many hours as weekdays), so it will have to wait until next weekend.

So I can't refer you to my research on this yet, but I can say:

  • Yes, most of the glyphs are based on Latin.
  • Yes, I agree, the scribes may have used the Latin glyphs to deliberately make it look like Latin (I've mentioned this before on the forum). The Latin abbreviation symbols are positioned pretty much as they are in real Latin* but the frequency and distribution of the intervening glyphs does not follow patterns of Latin text (at least not obviously so or in a one-to-one fashion). They are too positionally constrained.

On your claim that it is gematria, I'll reserve judgment. I don't see strong evidence for it yet. I can think of a small number of other scenarios that could account for the structure of the text so I don't see it as the only possibility.
