Bifolio as a functional unit?

Based on what I'm reading here, self-citation can, in theory, explain the LSA behavior, but you have to add an extra assumption: That self-citation in non-herbal sections was done 
at the bifolium level, but in the herbal section it was done on the page level. I would argue that indeed this extra assumption does work against the self-citation theory.

Not at all. Herbal section comes first. As the scribe(s) get tired, the scriptwork is often done on a bifolia basis to speed up the process. Alternatively, drawings were made first and then scribe(s) filled in the text; in the case of drawings spanning a (yet unbound) bifolium, self-citation on a bifolium basis is quicker (no need to juggle around pages). Or perhaps each scribe simply had their own quirks when auto-copying.

I tried to use an old Java LSA library but it seems full of bugs, too difficult for me to fix. I'm sure there is a perfectly fine Python implementation somewhere...
