"Curse" or Bird Mirror? - Bluetoes101 - 15-10-2026

When a social bird person is kept in isolation, providing a mirror mysterious manuscript can trigger a severe psychological phenomenon known as the "mirror trap.". Because most pet bird species people fail the mirror self-recognition test, they do not understand that the reflection is their own body mind. Instead, they perceive the reflection as a completely different, real bird solution.

In isolation, this illusion fills a desperate biological need for a flock friend, but it quickly spirals into a damaging, one-sided obsession.

The bird person becomes trapped in a loop of trying to get a reaction from a "stranger" that never vocalises back or moves independently.
This causes chronic anxiety, depression, and severe mental fatigue.

The bird person may begin violently guarding the mirror mysterious manuscript, treating its human owners peers or other toys people as hostile intruders. They will viciously bite or scream if anyone approaches their "friend".

Parrots People will often stop eating, grooming themselves, or playing with stimulating toys communicating with other people because they refuse to leave the side of the mirror mysterious manuscript.

Do we need a Voynich Manuscript Anonymous 12-steps support thread?

Almost certainly... I don't think he's the first to crack though...

I have often wondered what the longtime members here will do if the Voynich Manuscript is ever successfully translated/deciphered to majority satisfaction.  Will some simply refuse to accept it?  Will they move on to some other historical mystery?  Maybe take up collecting postage stamps/coins/baseball cards?

I do now and again masquerade as birdperson.
But here I was more referencing "The Voynich Curse" and how "experts are scared of it because it ruins careers", my point was the curse isn't real, its the "bird mirror" effect.

I think you could replace "Voynich Curse" with "AI Chat bots" and come to the same sort of conclusion, only they are actually programmed to be a mirror..

it would give a lot of us a lot more time, i think, although those whose ideas are not rendered moot might still be busy refining things. re the bird analogy, the bird is worried about the mirror bird, i don't think the analogy quite works for a Voynich researcher re ruined careers.. afraid to post in case it reveals something about themselves to the greater public or their peers, maybe? i suppose. i don't think about it much since i am not in that position, nor do i have a theory to outline.

This is a great and underappreciated piece of writing. Slightly sharp and probably too satyrical for many, but that's okay because you're British.

I am the mirror, and the mirror is me; I see myself, and everyone else who sees me, in their mirrors. All the mirrors together are just a single word, lacking all other words—and the bird and the researcher are victims of the one mirror that reflects all the other mirrors.   Angel Big Grin
