Could the charm on f116v be a book curse? - Dcoop28 - 01-10-2026 Hi all, I was wondering if has been considered that the charm on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. could be a book curse? I recently realized that many manuscripts from a similar time period have something along the lines of "If you steal this book, you will be cursed!" The only problem to this speculation is that I, after a brief search, have not found any similar matches. Thanks RE: Could the charm on f116v be a book curse? - RadioFM - 01-10-2026 According to many medieval experts, You are not allowed to view links. Seriously though, I think Koen G. goes over this in his Voynich Talk video about charms IIRC. You should check it out
RE: Could the charm on f116v be a book curse? - Bluetoes101 - 02-10-2026 I think it is unlikely. While some curses may not be documented as curses, because no one knows if they are or not (magical symbols n such), the ones we know of let the person know they are cursed and what will happen to them. It is not much of a deterent if no one can read it. Also you tend to see "may he be struck down by god/other authoritive or fear inducing name" Maria wasn't the "striking down" sort of gal. I discussed this with experts of Germanic Studies and Dialectology. Also with several pharmacists. According to them the recipe seems plausible and has been reproduced successfully. This note shows an ointment recipe for joint inflamation, quickly noted - perhaps for an assistant who had to prepare the ointment. Contrary to previous assumptions the content is not a charm or prayer. There have been difficulties in reading the gothic cursive letters correctly identifying the ductus of the scribe. Therefore the content did not make much sense. Years ago, the first who translated the text was Johannes Albus. He also identified it as a recipe. But it's nice that you discussed this with experts—it makes you wonder what kind of “experts” that were. ![]() In any case, none of the experts here in this forum found your translation plausible! |
