Is "porta8" on f116v a Latin abbreviated word? - JustAnotherTheory - 17-07-2026

I wonder whether the "porta8" word on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. is actually a Latin abbreviated word:

The reason is that I found several examples of 14-15th century Latin manuscripts, with this exact word (ending in "8"):

Could someone who speaks good Latin translate what "porta8" could be in these cases? I suspect the "8" is an abbreviation.

If it is so common, in 14-15th century texts, could this mean that the VMS You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. is also (partly) Latin?

1, 5, 6: "dum" (portandum). This abbreviation (d') also used for "de" was already obsolete in the 15th century.

The others are normal final "s" written more or less as a Greek sigma, but very often looks more like B or 8.

Maybe... Of course, this eight is different from the eight in the word oladabad, but I don't think they are different in any significant way.

Thanks. In that case, maybe the word in the VMS is "portandum"?

But there is no n? No macron over a.

I agree.
#2 appears to be comportans, split on two lines.

Would "oladabandum" make any sense at all?

Isn't that an "i" without a dot? So "compositas" seems much more likely to me: "r" is different and unambiguous. Accusative plural seems correct: "intendo ponere medicinas inusitatas compositas ad egritudinem". There is also "compositarum" on the 2nd line.

No Latin word starts with "olad".

Thank you. I stand corrected!
