If we assume the text is meaningful and these 3 Herbal pages have an appearance of Eva-x in common,  then do these pages have anything else in common ?

RE: Picnic Table glyph; Eva-x - eggyk - 03-03-2026

I've probably missed one on the rosettes page, but for the life of me I couldn't find the 9th one.

f46r:

f55r:

f57v:

f66r:

f104r-f108v:

f111r-f115v:

Rosettes:

Some important notes:

The x symbol displays variance within individual pages. The curve of the lines, whether or not there is a vertical stem, whether there is a sharp curve on the left leg etc.

Most of the symbols do not have a clear vertical stem (different in direction to the bottom two strokes). Some have a middle stem that seems to be an extension of one of the two bottom strokes. Some have blotched ink where the stem would be, so its not entirely clear whether or not it has one.

To do any analysis of its use, we probably need to work out if we're dealing with 1 symbol or multiple.

Nice job collating the individual glyphs like that.

Here is how i got the rosettes count. (see attachment)

Oh, the + markers spacing got displaced., Oh again, seems like theyre ok when downloaded.

RE: Picnic Table glyph; Eva-x - R. Sale - 03-03-2026

It's the age-old question. Different letters or scribal variations? There are also several examples with an inward turned foot on the left leg. It shows a lot of inconsistency between certain groups.

RE: Picnic Table glyph; Eva-x - eggyk - 04-03-2026

If we assume the curved left foot is a variant of a regular x symbol, it also opens up questions about the v symbol. Could it explain why we don't see v anywhere?

Perhaps we do see it everywhere.. Just a thought..

People doing counts may want to cross-check with this document:

in particular the X family near the very end of the document

This also notes some variants that GC distinguished in his alphabet.

An observation I have not seen here is that almost all occurrences of the picnic table are on B language pages. The main (only?) exceptions are on f57v, where one might argue that the language identification is a bit difficult.

I've asked elsewhere, if we see ih then do we see ci? and I think we do. But it is rare (and especially x examples). Perhaps it is not so rare but done in a way in which it is not totally obvious to us. I think understanding patterns within the text will be the key, but others think different. It's an interesting topic of discussion anyway.

This symbol is often seen in diplomatic ciphers of the period.

RE: Picnic Table glyph; Eva-x - RobGea - 04-03-2026

Picnic Table has a passing similarity to big red seagull glyph on f01r (rare char,  <!@252;>  in ZL3b-n)   --when flipped.
