[Just for fun] Favorite Plant Tournament! - Koen G - 17-04-2025

At last year's Voynich Manuscript Day (VMD), I presented the results of the "State of the Voynich" poll. In case you missed it, you can see the video here: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. . However, tradition dictates that there is only a State of the Voynich every 4 years or so, so for this year I came up with an alternative:

We will match up all large-plant drawings from the MS and determine the forum's favorite Voynich plant

The structure will be as follows:
  • Stage 1: plants are matched in groups of 8 or 9. A poll determines the winner in each groups.
  • Stage 2: the group winners are matched in 4 groups of 4. A poll determines the winner of each group.
  • Stage 3: The four winners of stage 2 battle it out in a final poll of the champions. This poll will be off-site, so the results remain hidden until VMD on 3 August, when I will reveal the winner.

Since this is just for fun and not serious at all, campaigning for your favorite plant in a bracket is allowed, even encouraged!

For the first bracket, the following plants are matched against each other:

  1.  f2v
  2.  f3r
  3.  f11v
  4.  f13v
  5.  f19v
  6.  f45r
  7.  f46v
  8.  f52r
  9.  f66v

Voting is now open! Which one of these plants should advance to the next round?

I agree, there is a clear favorite in this bracket. Although "eagle wings" may surprise us as the underdog.

My vote is for f2v,  however there are so many characterful Voynich plants that i cannot help but advocate for some of the others.

1  .f2v   :  It is prosaic maybe even a little boring but as one of the most identifiable plants in the voynich it should get more love.
2  .f3r   :  0
3  .f11v :  It resembles an artichoke and artichokes like pangolins are just cool, period.
4  .f13v: : Sci-fi.
5  .f19v :  Double decker.
6  .f45r :  0
7  .f46v :  Some plants in the voynich are gaudy and rough but the delicate loop of flowers here is just pure art.
8  .f52r :  Root resembles a little dude ...  cute.
9  .f66v :  0

They all have things going for them.

  1.  f2v - emblematic, no more, no less.
  2.  f3r - one of the only large plant drawings that have no flower or fruit!
  3.  f11v - I agree, the overlapping pattern is pretty cool and the whole plant looks quite outlandish.
  4.  f13v - The three protrusions are quite unique.
  5.  f19v - I don't particularly like this plant.
  6.  f45r - root, leaves and inflorescence (?) are all interesting in their own right.
  7.  f46v - this would be my second choice. Well drawn and iconic.
  8.  f52r - special root but not one of my favorites
  9.  f66v - unusual stature; all Q8 plants are a bit off.

Number 7 most definitely. The potential representation of costmary (herb of the virgin) and Saint Michael's wings suggests an 'allegorical' interpretation that goes beyond any sort of botanical monograph.

The dehydrated turd tree is very tempting (4).. and 7 has the most interesting writing, but since I'm not voting on that I'll go with 1.

1 reminds me of the dead marshes bit in LOTR where there are faces under the water (some of the roots look a bit like faces)

"don't follow the lights"..

I voted for 7 You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. mostly because of what RobGea said: those flowers are wonderful!

Don't forget that you actually have to vote in the poll to make it count!

I voted f2v, only because it always reminded me of a leaf of You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. mingled with a flower and stem of You are not allowed to view links. (The reniform leaves of Asarum are very distinctive among European plants, and ihmo very cool. I can only remember You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. having similar leaves)
