Linda: not bad at all. Looking at all the uses for Okra, I would almost certainly expect it in the VM.

It has a ton of applications, including as an antiscorbutic (!). Also, apparently the roots are edible but "mucilaginous" - I had to look up this word, but isn't that kind of what the roots of this plant look like? Like gloopy?

Also: "A fibre obtained from the stems is used as a substitute for jute. Strong and silky. It is also used in making paper and textiles." Might the leaf have been drawn flattened like that to bring to mind this usage? Like a flat sheet of paper?

Let's not wander offtopic from f8r.

Are there any more ideas about the lesser leaf and the hook? I am totally puzzled.

UPD, for what it's worth: I just thought of the lesser leaf as of a weather vane.

The issue of whether the plants are duplicated in the small- and large-plants section does have a bearing on the identification of 8r and all the plants. If it's in the small-plants section in a totally different way, one that resembles a possible ID for a big plant, then the ID for the big plant may be wrong.

I'm pretty sure if the VMS illustrator intended this to be okra, the hook would have been a pair of hooks , not a single hook.

Petasites has lesser leaves if you want to include the smaller clasping leaves that grow up the stalk. If those are not intended in the VMS drawing, then I don't know what the hook represents other than a fallen leaf from a plant that hasn't been mentioned yet.

I'll spilt the "overlap" posts to a new thread, this is a thread we must have anyway.

What's also worth noting is that the portion of the stem right above the lesser leaf is made deliberately thicker.

Yes, and some plants have that. I don't know what it means in the VMS plant. It could be literal or symbolic. I really don't know.
