All of the above, for sure. Unfortunately no time this trip for meeting up!

OK, another time... best of luck with your visit with the Marci letter... I'm sure we all look forward to any data and images you can share.

I apologize in advance for asking so soon, but I'm of course excited to see the images and measurements, if you have them...

But of course whenever you have the chance I, and others I'm sure, would love to see them... if you managed to get this information on Monday, of course...

Thanks,

Rich

Here you go! The watermark is 55 x 33 mm. There does not appear to be anything above it (like a star or cross) and there are no other watermarks on the paper. The chain lines are 26 mm apart. Full-size image is here: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

That's great, Lisa! But I do see the uploaded watermark crops at your link have been reduced quite a bit, and are very pixelated when enlarged. For instance one watermark image is only 839 x 595 pixels, and 72 dpi, which is only half a megapixel. Others are .57 megapixels, and 1.1. I see a couple of the overall pics are as much as 12.5 megapixels, but then of course enlarging them loses the details again. I see that you used a Google Pixel 8, and I'm guessing on megawide, but not "super res zoom"? The specs for your phone show a 50 MP camera, but it drops to 12 MP on megawide.

Do you have any higher res pictures you can share? I would love to see some of the actual detail of the paper, seal and etc., which is unfortunately lost on these. And also, did you also measure the lines, or just the chain distance? I'd love to see anything else you have, whatever that is.

Thanks... Rich

All of the images I took are now in the shared folder.

Judging by the images we need to be looking for a watermark where the middle and right hat are roughly 2/3 of the width of the one on the left, unless this inconsistency is just part of the watermark process. I'm not knowledgeable on them at all.

Watermarks are not objectively reliable evidence, because every time a particular screen mold is used, the wires that create the watermark may be slightly warped, so the watermark isn't going to be exactly the same every time. They're valuable, of course, but you have to be cautious about how you use them as evidence.

Thanks again, Lisa. I saw that when you wrote this, you had uploaded a few more images than I saw at first. And they do have quite a bit of very useful information on them. Really important to me is that there was a ruler on the light table in both the vertical and horizontal positions. This is great for all measurements, overall size, "tab" size, and the spacing of the Lines & Chains.

They are also so much better than the large, "official" .tif at the Beinecke site. Although large, it seems that when they took it, the letter had a sort of gauze or mesh over it. This seems to have blurred the detail, making it difficult to even see the lines. I always supposed that mesh was some sort of support for the weak paper of the letter, but didn't know. And I worried it was adhered TO the letter, but I see it was not... when you took your pictures, it appears there was no mesh. Do you happen to know what that was? Was it still there with the letter?

I've got them all downloaded, and hope to be able to work with them in the next week or two.

Rich

Indeed, but there is also a digital image without that. I cannot remember on which occasion I got that, but I temporarily put it You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view..
