Personally I find interesting a simple cipher that is included by Hartlieb in his book:

If I understand it correctly, it is a simple substitution cipher that is easy to remember even without a written key because it uses real life objects starting with given letter.

For example when you draw a sword, it means "g" because it is the first letter of "gladius" which is sword in Latin.

In the same way

flower = f (flos)
wheel = r (rota)
8 = o (otto)  etc.

Notice that some of these symbols are quite similar to Voynichese symbols, including gallows.

Of course it isn't the key for Voynich. Voynichese seems not to be simple substitution cipher.
But it (or something related) could be some inspiration.

Like others say, Harlieb most probably isn't author of VM. But he seems to share some background with the author.

By the way, you really didn't need to be hotshot scholar to write Voynich. A lot of data observed on these forums suggest that the author could copy images from different sources without any deeper understanding of them.
