Even though the term is used with encrypted texts, why not also use it in case this is an unknown language.

Cribs are like keys. Keys open locks. If, in this singular instance that is the VMs, the key does not turn the lock, then it is not a key. Many proposed cribs have not been generally accepted. There is no accepted key for Voynichese translation.
