It may seem a bit far-fetched, but could the illustration in the VMS represent some kind of snake?

The serpent line of stuff was pretty messy I think
If you start here and click right it passes through a few different types, inc some weird "snakes" like the one you show

I thought the first page was interesting because of the dragons tails. It's what I've found hardest to match up (this is still not a good match, but just less typical), all serpents are shown with long tails that I've seen (outside weird made up creatures that look nothing like the VM drawing) even if its wrapped up or in a knot, the VM one is more like a weird extra leg, might just be a rubbish drawing.. but still would be cool to find something with a short clubbed tail

I also think that it could simply be a poor drawing, or that the illustrator didn't want to make it too obvious.

Not far-fetched, it's literally what I showed a few posts before yours: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

In the alchemist's herbal, dragon = snake = plant against snake bites.

Both dragons and snakes appear relatively frequently in herbals. If anything, the Voynich MS is a bit unusual in that each of them appear with exactly one plant.

Also, people were unsure whether a basilisk was a serpent or a dragon, so it may appear in either form.

This is my latest best guess..

I think they weren't even sure whether a dragon was a serpent or a dragon :). In Greek and Latin, draco could really be any large serpent.

Bluetoes: a foliage dragon seems plausible. I wonder what the weird double line is running from the "tail" to the win. Might one of the foliages have branched off from the tail to go behind the body and emerge at the chest, to then be reinterpreted as the far leg?

The example you post seems pretty close in facial features, though the VM dragon seems to have lost its dentures.

RE: "Dragon" 25v - Bluetoes101 - 19-11-2025

I guess if the weird "wing tips" which don't really work due to the tapered off large wing (like in the example) are not meant to be that, they might be rather bodged attempts at a continuation of that double tail line, then it flicks behind the body and the end of the tail pokes out front, might be a third one that ends behind the body.

I'm going to see if I can build a bit of a collection of foliage dragons with where/when and see if anything interesting emerges I think

Seems that the Latin word "draco" meant indifferently dragon or snake.  I somehow had the impression that, in the Medieval mind, dragons were viewed as a species of snake (rather than, say, of lizard or crocodile).

Thus I suppose that the Snake of Genesis, being a particularly evil snake, had to be a dragon...

All the best, --stolfi
