I don't know if this is true for all LLMs but ChatGPT prefers to hallucinate references than admit it has no idea what its sources are. I suppose that all sources of data are amalgamated in the Large Language Model so getting a reference for a specific piece of information is as impossible as unscrambling eggs. ChatGPT often answers this type of query with made-up references (books and articles) that sound plausible but don't exist. See for example: You are not allowed to view links.
