What is this on the top left of the Rosette Page? - eggyk - 13-02-2026

Next to the sun on the top left of the rosettes foldout is a word, what is this? Is it definitely voynichese? It's only visible in the 2014 scans.

The "a" has a left loop curving more strongly upwards than a standard a in voynichese, unless i'm mistaken. The middle letters look a lot like a cr, but the dot above makes me see ci as well.

If it isn't voynichese, what does it say? _acrio, _aciio, Iacrio, Iaciio?

If voynichese, is it rachio , rachid ?

There are a couple of threads about it either on Analysis of text or Marginalia subforums. If you haven't already you should take a trip down research lane there. There are lots of threads, yes, but it's definitely worth catching up with current knowledge of the VMS

Unfortunately the search function isn't exactly very useful (it just gives every thread or post that has ever mentioned the rosettes page). I searched every term I could think of and couldn't find another thread anywhere but I probably missed it. Do you have the links to them?

Some recent thread about it: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

My proposed reading: sachidy

But there IS something weird with that word.

For me "i" looks not like Voynichese i but like our i with a dot over it. "A" is also more like our "a" and not Voynichese a

But I am not sure, of course. This fragment is not only worn out but also written on a very bad parchment. I suppose Lisa Fagin Davies could say it is "animalistic" - rough, with remaining hairs and so on. It could influence the writing quality.

And what is that sign after it? An exclamaition mark??? Rather not.

Thank you both. What is crazy is that if you type "rosettes top left" or "rosettes page top left" into the search area, it says there are no results (even though its literally the post title in the link).

Anyway, Rene's post here: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. seems very convincing to me. It has probably been deformed due to the folding of the parchment.

The forum's search looks for an exact match (not matching case), but "rossetes" is not "rosettes".

My point was that I tried to search before posting. I just didn't guess the exact spelling and order of the titles, and didn't sift through 20 pages of threads for the search "Rosettes".

The Search box is not so good, click the search link (magnifying glass icon) for more advanced search options.

Without a clear scan I don't think I can have an opinion on what it says at all. I wouldn't even be confident in the first letter.
However if I trust Theodore Petersen's version,

saeeasaC

This is extremely odd "Voynichese", at just about every turn. I've wondered in cases like these if they are not using the usual encoding method.

ae is extremely rare, and so is ac (if it is ach and not aee)
as is also extremely rare, and a lot of supposed cases are more likely ar and transcribed wrongly.
c with no h or kh (etc) is basically unheard of. Again the ac pairing is extremely rare also. And obviously, you can not end a word like this, even completed as ch I don't think that ends words very often at all, though these sorts of stats are not my forte, so happy to be proven wrong if so.

If this reading is right, it is not normal Voynichese at all, it is about as far away as you can get. I'd speculate then that it is maybe outside of the normal method (maybe it is a simple substitution of a name, or something), or maybe added later by one of Jorge's pals..
