drawing would conflict with painting
some images are drawings, and some are paintings (or maybe painted drawings)
Of course, I'd forgotten they were painted in, I was just thinking of the lines.

I don't get what's wrong with 'images', isn't that more neutral than pictures? For me basically any ink that has been applied with intent and isn't a glyph can be called an image. I'd call a diagram an image but not a picture.
Let's encourage native speakers to select the optimal word for that.

I think of both diagrams and pictures as images. Image is a pretty broad term.
