The imagery in this MS recalls a lot that of the VMS. Perhaps wew can find some clues as to the identity of some plants in the VMS from this.

Could the VMS be inspired from a now lost Provencal/Occitan herbal source?

As far as I remember, the connection with the Occitan herbalists was discussed on Nick Pelling's website.
There are indeed some similarities, but there is an explanation for this, as Occitania is quite close to Northern Italy...
