The following is a call for help based on a reading of You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. and the manuscript as Arabic (with Syriac inflections). The glyph-to-phoneme mapping was produced by cross-referencing Maimonides' Medical Glossary and Paul Sbath's translation of the Kitāb al-Azmina (Book of Times) by Ibn Māsawayh against the MS. A majority of findings came from treating the manuscript's sections as transformative "gates", mapping token transitions and noting Galenic quality changes.

This framework suggests the manuscript was written by an East Syriac (Church of the East) physician-monk from the Mosul–Alqosh corridor, c. 1400–1440, using a purpose-built phonemic cipher to encode Arabic pharmaceutical content within a Syriac liturgical framework. My assumption is that the folio is a colophon, an introductory text for the MS. Its token structure is different to anything in the other sections.

• Does the colophon structure match known East Syriac manuscript conventions?

Yep, that's accounted for. The remainder of the text doesn't function as a "text" it's separate from f1r. If any folio were to contain a readable text then it would be f1r, it behaves quite differently to the rest of the MS. The remainder of the text is (under this theory) a compression of reference tokens encoding plant components and their Galenic qualities, the methods for preparation, the agents of preparation, the produced compounds and their Galenic qualities, the treatments, the ailments they treat... but that's a whole separate thread, for this post I'm focused on You are not allowed to view links. Why do you think that You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. "behaves quite differently"? It is damaged so some words are a bit difficult to make out but it has enough vocabulary in common with other pages to not really stand out. Many pages have less vocabulary in common with any other page (in % of the total) than f1r.

The high number of single occurrence tokens, zero prescription prefixes (qo), zero pharma prefixes (l), high use of bracket consonants (c-h bound glyphs), high use of d prefix tokens, high use of sh prefix tokens.

Aside from that the structure, it prefaces the botanical section but doesn't have a plant image, in terms of layout it doesn't look like any of the other section. It's not the only "strange" folio but it is the one I'm focusing on here.

Did you ever even watch that video, and compared it‘s claims with VMS?
It is simply misleading.

Hi another day and another set of updates. I have busy running cross-word-like word decoding.

Actually I should take a step back, a few months ago I had the idea that the manuscript is likely

a)a reference lookup for an apothecary/physician using reference tokens to pass back and forth between sections
b)encoding galenic qualities in those tokens so that the physician knows what to use and for what they can use it and what parts of plants they can harvest for some benefit
c)transforming these tokens when they traverse from botanical to preparatory to treatment (index and balneological sections)

The first peek through the system was counting the occurrence of e and a characters in the zodiac folios, understanding that e represented the thermal axis of an element, that a represented the moisture axis of an element and then that "ch" and "sh" encoded for earth and air respectively. So "chedy" encodes something like:

ch - Earth Element (Cold and Dry)
e - 1st Degree
dy - Draining Action (we'll deal with this another time)

The next step was to trace those tokens from botanical through preparatory sections where I could also deduce the agents used during preparation, wine/honey and then finally to balneological to associate it with organs and treatments.

Which is a long way of saying my initial post here has an update. I've approached a couple friends to review the output and their response is that Syriac words are indeed identifiable but they don't come together into a coherent meaning. I'm still waiting on more academic types to pass their responses and I'll update when that is the case so, I guess we can say that there's nothing concrete yet or anything that would indicate this isn't another rabbit hole.

It is damaged so some words are a bit difficult to make out but it has enough vocabulary in common with other pages to not really stand out. I don't necessarily disagree, I work with ML everyday at work so I'm pretty used to the cycle of planning, context setting, verification through falsification. I guess I would posit that this "decoding" is a side product of a more comprehensive line of work regarding the rest of the manuscript. There's a messy play-by-play of that process on my blog, but again it's messy and not community ready. I think I can fairly convincingly demonstrate "readability" of the VMS under the context of a pharmacological reference document in the vein of the Kitab al-Azmina and I hope to have that with the community in the next few days.
