Good point!
I'll try to see if I can find a match for that: it would definitely make sense considering the rings and crowns that other nymphs are depicted with in this section.
I've been thinking about Diane's suggestion of them representing constellations, and though it's not my preferred idea, I must say there is something to it.

For example, it's important which parts of the constellation are hidden, which could be represented by the left hand specifically being tucked away. The 'eye' of a constellation is often an important star. And constellations can move into each other.

I'm no expert on star stuff, but I suspect this approach may have a lot of explanatory power.
Today accidently, i stumbled on this picture and wanted to share that here, 
although probably everybody already have seen that before,
from Dioscoridis's manuscript. This instrument can also "do something" with a jar and a ...plant ?
