Voynich style herbs+text wrapping: BSB Cgm 728 - eggyk - 05-07-2026

I tried searching the forum, google, and the search engine and came up empty. Has this manuscript been discussed before?

The section from 71v-115r (scans 148-236) contains badly drawn herbs which are terribly coloured in. The text often wraps around the pictures, similar to the VMS.

(It also has an abrelenn and augst, but that's not very relevant)

For some reason, I found the spelling of ch to be quite similar to f116v...
As for the coloring, it's worse than in VMS. The VMS artist aimed for a variety of colors and some form of design.

Thankyou! I forgot to put them under like I normally do. I've edited the OP with the info from the month name spreadsheet.

Interesting manuscript. When I looked for Voynich-like page layouts long ago, I certainly did not know of it, or it would have been included. This is certainly among the closest to the Herbal layout.

It also appears to make very extensive use of color annotations. If it was already discussed before, it may be in that context, otherwise it's a new addition. Often they are still visible at the top edge, half clipped off. Or just right next to the plant. There are entire phrases like "everything in green", "the flowers are yellow".

And a bunch of color terms. Different kinds of "gell", lots of "grün". And of course:

This root has something like "rot fa...", maybe some variant on "vahl", maybe a faded red?

Scan 205 has a word starting with "p", can't read it. Weis plüd?

There may be some relevance for the marginalia written at the top of f17r, which has been read as a painting instruction. "mallier aller.... " -> paint all...
This manuscript does basically that: phrases of painting instructions at the top of the page, which may include a form of "all".

I think so. "weis plüd". "weis" is everywhere in places with white/uncoloured areas.

On scan 175 there is (i think) an "und grün" or "and grün", with the same style d.

As for yellow, that/then and green. gell = yellow
The gentian blooms blue, this one blooms white.
plut = blood and plüt = blooms.

Zum Gelb das/dann und Grün. gell=Gelb
Blau blüht der Enzian, dieser plüt weiss.
plut=Blut und plüt=blüht.
Blüht von Blüte/Blossom

At least some of the plants appear to be related with the early printed herbal Gart der Gesundheit (images, text, chapter numbers)

I thought the manuscript copied the printed book, but the illustrations are mirrored, so it could be the other way round, or maybe both derive from a shared source

EDIT: if I understand correctly, the Report linked in post #1 says it's copied from the printed book. I am still puzzled by the mirroring

If I read it correctly, the report refers to the second printed version from Augsburg. However, that may not make a difference. It also says that initial drawings are mirrored, meaning that later drawings are not.

Possibly, the manuscript illustrator may have assumed that the printed book had inverted the drawings (as would be usual) and he wanted to draw them 'correctly'. Then he got tired of that and gave up.

But that is complete guesswork from my side.

It would be nice if any drawings of Reeuwyck have survived.

Surprised Surprised

Did you just find the manuscript that was the Scribe's "inspiration" for page f4r?

All the best, --stolfi
