I was working on something else, but stumbled upon this detail.
Looks like a gamecube or dice.
Its from Martin Waldseemüller's map.

I know I saw it in the VMS somewhere, perhaps it was on the rosette, but I will be too distracted if I try to find it.
Anybody recognizes it, and has knowledge on the function of this detail image?
Perhaps a wind-direction-compass-like thing?

These are what I would have expected to trigger familiarity, but it doesn't seem very conclusive. These kinds of designs are used in folk art from practically every culture.
