I'd like to add another item to my bullet list of some of the properties of herbarium specimens...

When you flatten the leaves, sometimes plants with palmate leaves (ones that fan out from the petiole attachment) look like peltate leaves (where the attachment is within the leaf rather than on the edge) because the butt ends of the leaves are pushed together.

This may seem like a small detail but it's an important one in terms of identifying plants from illustrations. If someone drawing from a herbarium specimen assumed from the flattened leaf that the plant were peltate, they would probably draw it that way if they were not familiar with the plant in the field.

Thus a palmate plant like industrial hemp or geranium, if roughly drawn, might resemble a completely different plant like Cecropia or Ricinus.
