Cary and I presented a paper about these shapes at the Malta conference: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
Basically, we believe they are meant to look a bit like tents or canopies seen from above. The makers of the Voynich maintain a visual metaphor with biblical origins: "the sky is like a tent/canopy".
