[split] Log man - Aga Tentakulus - 06-05-2020

To this picture a connection to medicine immediately comes to my mind.

RE: Medieval sirens and mermaids - -JKP- - 06-05-2020

To me the object in the water looks like a log that has been braced against two posts. The bracing only works if the log is on the side of the current where the current is pushing it against the posts.

This kind of setup was used in the Middle Ages to help siege soldiers get across moats if the water was rough, but the guy leaning against the log doesn't look like a soldier, he looks like someone lounging, having a good time. It makes me wonder if there were places in natural spas where they added logs for people to lean against so they could get a water massage in water with a current, somewhat like the water jets they now have in hot tubs and in some artificial spa pools.

I've also suggested in another thread a more abstract alternative... that is is a reference to the crucifixion, but in a veiled way.

@JKP
What do you think about these 2 pictures ?
All three have something in common.

Here I have more examples.
Also a modern version is included.
All methods are used to put joints back in place.
The VM picture probably shows the elbow.

@Koen
It's best if you do another split.
Someday I will know how to do that.
Thanks

Aga, I think those are good examples.

The best method is to start a new thread instead of going off-topic Wink
But it's okay, I like splitting interesting tangents.

RE: [split] Log man - Anton - 07-05-2020

I remember we discussed this picture recently. My idea was that here a yoke is used to improve posture.

RE: [split] Log man - -JKP- - 07-05-2020

The way his left arm is turned toward the right elbow, and his expression, looks like he is pointing it out, gesturing toward it, rather than actually using it.

Looking at these treatments, it leads me to f75r.
Here it is the attitudes of the people. From top to bottom. Arm, leg, elbow, stab, wrist.
What I can't see are the fingers.
Anyone who's ever had a lumbago knows what I mean by stabbing.

When I look at both sides of this thesis and look for a connection, the VM was bound here in the wrong order.
Whether ink, handwriting, parchment folding point to it would still be worth an investigation.

If I follow the thesis there might be an explanation for the colour green.
Green for external use like ointments ?
Blue for internal use ?

RE: [split] Log man - Koen G - 07-05-2020

I see two arguments against the interpretation of the log as a healing device.

1. All of your examples stress the need for a physician to perform the manipulation. We know that nymphs can appear in pairs in this section, yet this one is alone.

2. The thing floats in the water, which is why one thinks of it as made of wood. The figure appears to be using it as a flotation device.
