There are other plants that have leaves much more similar to the VMS plant, with a small berry or seed at the top. Some are European, some are eastern.
In medieval manuscripts, Paris was always drawn with an emphasis on four leaves (and they are more diamond-shaped) but I haven't seen any drawings of eastern Paris in European manuscripts, at least not yet.

On the left hand tuber we have 8 (4 to a side) irregular bumps on the sprout. This feature is very deliberate but does not exist on the right hand tuber. Any ideas?

The left hand tuber has a stem growing out of it that breaks into branches and leaves. The right hand is very different, it has leaves growing straight out of the tuber along with a branch.
I think they are different plants, or possibly very similar plants that have different uses. They are connected via the tuber to show their similarity.

David, thanks for pointing that out. There are some significant differences between the two and it is interesting that they have been connected in the drawing.
