Capricorn and Aquarius missing? - Antonio García Jiménez - 25-05-2018

Were missing Capricorn and Aquarius? Really? This is just a supposition, a guess. Maybe they were never drawn

Why the Zodiac starts with Pisces instead of Aries, something very odd? And why Aries and Taurus are repeated? Maybe the author of the pictures thought that the Zodiac would not be complete without twelve signs

I think that the unusual Zodiac makes sense with the message of the whole work. In chilly winter (Capricorn and Aquarius) don't grow herbs. All the Voynich is about the influence of the stars in plants. They make them germinate and give them its virtues. That don't occur in winter. Likely, Capricorn and Aquarius never were drawn

This has been discussed extensively. They are missing, yes, but we can't be sure if they were ever included somehow.
The "months" of Aries and Taurus are split (each one only has half the number of nymphs as the usual signs). It has been suggested that this was done because there would not have been enough space to include all nymphs in one roundel. An argument against this is that both Aries and Taurus look different from their counterpart, which might suggest some qualitative difference between both "halves".

The possible reason for starting with Pisces is again diverse. Note that by the time the VM was made, there were still various states using a calendar that started with Pisces.

Thank you Koen

I think the absence of Capricorn and Aquarius only makes sense with the idea that plants don't germinate in winter and the message of the Voynich is the influence of stars in the herbs

Or maybe these two signs have been drawn and the folio is missing.

The last zodiac signs drawn in Voynich are in folio 73.
Folio 73 recto symbolizes Scorpio with november written below this animal.
Folio 73 verso symbolizes Sagittarius with december probably written below the bowman.

At this stage of the VMS, is missing folio 74 and also the two signs Capricorn and Aquarius.
It's a possibility (not a certainty) that these two missing signs have been drawn in missing folio 74.

- Under "Scorpius" has been added nove'bre (nove[m]bre).
- Under "Sagittarius" has been added d~e~bre (d[ec]e[m]bre).

The macron (line that frequently stands for "m" or "n") and squiggly line (that usually stands for ir/er/re/ri but can also stand for other letters) are typical medieval abbreviation symbols.

The hand is Gothic cursive but the style in which the "e" is drawn is Gothic book hand (book-hand letters were sometimes mixed with cursive if the person who is writing learned both styles). The handwriting is probably within the same century as the person who wrote the marginalia on the last page, but it is not the same handwriting (by that I mean not the same person).

I very much doubt that these labels were on the original document. Different handwriting, different ink, and the text goes on top of the drawings as if the person who wrote was not being careful about the original.
