These are a bit out of date (I wrote them in 2008 or 2009 and uploaded them in 2013), but they talk about the host-tree (or possibly host-shrub) images:

I honestly believe the VMS illustrator used a rational approach to the plant drawings. Rather than slavishly copying images, sometimes the idea of how to present an image was copied.

For example, Hedera nigra (as it was called at the time) was sometimes shown twining around a host tree, but dodder was usually illustrated in old herbals in a different way... with a clump of orange strings, or slim tendrils in a flax field, but...

...it makes logical sense to illustrate dodder in a similar way to ivy (usually Hedera helix), as they have similar habits, and that's what the VMS illustrator did:
