"...the deponent did hear himself the said doctor afferme..." introduces at least two points of possible unceratinty and exaggerration - the deponent and the "said doctor"

So I simply would not take that at face value.

I didn't copy it down, but I was reading about the treasures in Rudolf II's cabinet and there was information about what he paid for some of them, and 600 ducats is a pittance compared to the cost of some of the more exotic items.

Six hundred ducats was a great deal of money to a farmer or minor artisan but apparently not very burdensome for Rudolf.
