In Kircher, it is a tower near the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. This is not about the biblical story.

As poorly as "a 1978 Chevrolet Malibu, as described in the book of Enoch".

And what is your opinion, please, on the resemblance to the Tower of Babel?

You mean a tower built in the ground, with no relation whatsoever to the Tower of Babel?

If you want something authentically Ethiopian (like 1 Enoch), the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela would do: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

The whole idea of the Tower of Babel was that it could not be finished because God confused people's languages and scattered them across the earth.

And as the purpose of the Tower of Babel was to reach up to and enter the heavens, they surely wouldn't want a spire or roof structure, would they? On the other hand, there have been thousands of tall buildings over the centuries with spiral ascent structures (including internal ones).

So my first thought if I saw a medieval illustration of a finished tower with a roof - especially one shown not reaching the heavens - would be a long way from Babel.

As an aside, that's one of the sites I'd love to visit. I've visited similar structures in India, and they're truly awesome (in the real sense of the word - inspiring awe!)

Digressing,

Register or Login to view.Today, I would like to present further compelling evidence regarding Athanasius Kircher's influence on the creation of the VMS. His work *Turris Babel* (1679) contains numerous depictions of the Tower of Babel; in it, Kircher addresses human pride and other vices. On the VMS map, this Tower of Babel is situated on the line connecting the seventh and eighth heavens, as described in the Book of Enoch. To me, this serves as further proof that the map is a cosmological depiction of the universe featuring celestial spheres. After all, the Tower of Babel symbolized humanity's desire and pride in attempting to draw closer to God. I believe this also warrants a re-evaluation of the date when the content of certain VMS folios was created.

My goal was to compare this specific image by Athanasius Kircher with an object in the VMS. I was not looking for other images of the Tower of Babel. There are two points involved: establishing the view that the rosettes are celestial spheres, and challenging the dating of the VMS text's creation.

I really don't know. Maybe the artist (I guess Kircher didn't illustrate his book himself) messed things up and drew complete tower while it should be incomplete.

Notice that in the biblical narration the tower isn't destroyed by God, it is just left incomplete. It is okay to assume that any drawing of ancient Babylon will have this tower present.

Here is another picture from the work of Kircher showing both incomplete and complete tower (on the sketch):

The architect showing the plans for the complete tower is there to show man's haughty ambitions and to highlight that those plans will not be completed.

Please ask your favorite LLM if Athanasius Kircher believed the tower of Babel was completed.
