It is considered the oldest fortified residential tower in the Alps. The swallowtail merlons and most windows were only added around 1500. Much of the convent museum is inside this tower. So really not a good example if you believe the carbon dating. RE: 15thc perception on swallowtail merlons? - Koen G - 02-07-2024 Thanks, Michelle! It's a really cool tower, but I already suspected the crenellations looked suspicious. RE: 15thc perception on swallowtail merlons? - LisaFaginDavis - 25-07-2024 I'm going to Malta in August and will definitely photograph more merlons there! RE: 15thc perception on swallowtail merlons? - Aga Tentakulus - 06-08-2024 What else might be worth knowing about the wall (Murata) in Bellinzona. What did it look like around 1356 before the Confederates breached it (around 1422) and before it was reinforced? There are 296 dovetail battlements and they face north. Only on one side. RE: 15thc perception on swallowtail merlons? - Dana Scott - 28-08-2024 Point of clarification: In reference to merlon crenulations in the VMS, note that the "castle" on the 9 rosettes folio has Guelph merlons on the left wall and Ghibelline merlons on the front and back walls. The right side of the "castle" does not have a distinct wall and therefore no crenulations. These variances may need further clarification/explanation. RE: 15thc perception on swallowtail merlons? - Koen G - 26-11-2024 Apparently this was already on the map, though a bit unclearly. I added the link and better references.
