I'd really enjoy reading some formally-argued and documented exposition of the 'central European' theory and its recent expansion, in that group, from 'German-Italian' to 'German-French', but it has yet to be done - if it can be done.
I can assure you that my introduction of saddlebacks and flag finials to this forum had NOTHING to do with a central European "theory" or any "expansion" of this purported theory. I was making an observation and pointing out facts that I thought might be of interest to other researchers.

Early 15th century MS. Canon. Misc. 378 (copy of Carolingian copy of 400 CE Roman MS) places several buildings of this type along the Nile.

Edit: just for clarity, the MS puts them everywhere, so they are used as a type rather than actual buildings.

Yes, it looks like they are used to indicate the portals (entrances), which is basically what many of the saddleback towers represented in those days.
