RE: The geomantic theory - JustAnotherTheory - 21-06-2026 @ReneZ, I would be interested in hearing your opinion about this geomantic method of generating Voynichese. What do you think, would such a method be plausible for the early 1400s? Do you think this idea has some merit (any at all)? Or just a waste of everyone's time. Any kind of input from experts such as yourself would be appreciated. RE: The geomantic theory - oshfdk - 21-06-2026 (21-06-2026, 08:47 AM)JustAnotherTheory Wrote: You are not allowed to view links. To actually assess your method much more data is needed, which I think at least 3 people have already said in this thread. Either there should be a precise specification of how to generate a few pages of text this way using random inputs or you could generate a few pages yourself and share the result and the exact method. If you want just a gut feeling, then I'd say this method won't work, because it lacks any sophisticated mechanism to explain many statistical peculiarities of Voynichese. I will start work on this right now. RE: The geomantic theory - ReneZ - 21-06-2026 (21-06-2026, 08:47 AM)JustAnotherTheory Wrote: You are not allowed to view links. What do you think, would such a method be plausible for the early 1400s? Do you think this idea has some merit (any at all)? My answer might disappoint you.... This is one of quite a few threads that I don't read in detail because it does not seem promising from the start. All methods of generating random text have the same problem: they fail to explain the peculiar features of the MS text, except when the method is reverse-engineered from the text itself. Thank you very much, Mr, Z. To the contrary, I take such feedback as it is intended, an insightful criticism. I've coded the algorithm in Python this afternoon, and tried to generate a full page of Voynichese. The result is that some phrases look Voynichese, while the page itself as a whole does not. I conclude that either my initial parameters are wrong, or that the VMS was not generated in this manner. I think it is the latter. Thanks again |
