The multiplicity of interpretations can come from the language itself, not just from your reading. Homonymy, polysemy, and other enantiosemy are real obstacles to understanding a text and do not depend on any rules you might establish.
This is why I'm generally cautious of "translation" type of solutions. If the method doesn't start with producing some grammatically correct text in the original language of the manuscript, then it's very hard to verify.
If the original was a constructed language or an unrecorded language not related to well known languages, then there is no way around this problem, I think. If a solution involves a language that no-one knows, the supporting arguments should be much stronger than for a solution that somehow manages to produce a coherent text in a known language.
