An aspect of specialization that is often overlooked (in science in general) is communication. The specialist becomes totally immersed in his subject, starts seeing things differently, knows so much context that every new bit of information means more to him than to others, because he can make all these connections to what he knows and understands already. If these specialists don't make an effort to bridge the gap to the general reader, then we may miss opportunities to better understand the manuscript as a whole.
