Hmmm hmm. One of my pet theories about the script is that it is a Latinized transcription of a cursive that may have been written from right to left. That may explain a bit.
I've tried hard to find examples of right-to-left scripts that may have been Latinized and badly transcribed (someone who didn't recognize subtle distinctions between some of the letters and thus repeated them rather than using a unique glyph) and haven't been able to map any yet to the VMS. But... even though I've looked hard and haven't succeeded, I still think it's a possibility that something like this may have happened.
