With all due respect to Lisa Fagin Davis, who has made valuable contributions to the understanding of the Voynich, it is highly unlikely that this codex was created by women. I do not doubt that there were female writers and artists in the 15th century, but they were a minority because, regrettably, women were barred from university and their role was severely limited.
I suppose the assumption that the Voynich is the work of women rests on the interpretation of Quire 13 as a section dealing with balneology or female biology. Some have even gone so far as to see a uterus in the Rosettes.To me, this is merely an illusion that overlooks the metaphorical significance of medieval images. The female figures we see represent something else. The practice of depicting ideas embodied in human figures is very ancient—so much so that we tend to forget it. New York’s Statue of Liberty is a woman.
Where I agree with Lisa is that there is no need to look for well-known names as the authors of the Voynich. There were many anonymous, educated people who could have created it.
