Here's a clear example of how sometimes they really wanted both fish to be different. Bottom one has a more upturned nose again.

Admittedly, the only reason why I picked up on the little nose thing was because Diane once wrote about it (focusing on the ancient origins of the distinction). She did share this one image with me where the bottom fish again has this clearly different nose. She doesn't remember the source. Going by the filename, it's from the Codices latini monacenses (Clm) of the BSB.

BSB Clm 826 according to: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

It's on f. 7v: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

From Prague, shortly after 1400.

Thanks! It's interesting that JKP was looking for fish with long noses in general, and doing so he found several that show the up-down tendency.

That must be a mistake, looks like a different MS altogether. JKP did collect enough examples of the tendency though. I wanted to get a better picture of whether it is actually worth considering as a factor.

Finally I found it on f. 7v and edited my post. It's very small, easy to miss. Smile

Just looking at the curtain, the big "ring" holding it together reminded me of this:

Transcription and translation of the beginning of the text (Reg.lat.1256, You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.):
Quote:This is where sleep and wakefulness begin

If you realize that sleep was created to give the body rest and health as well as natural balance, then it must be taken at the appropriate time and place. For this reason, sleep should be taken in the third part of the day or longer according to nature's requirements.

Sleep must not last too long, as this would be more harmful than beneficial. And so, if a person wants to preserve his health, he must be careful to let the body sleep well so that nature remains in a good state and the soul can be kept in good condition......

So it really is a bedroom curtain (cortina lecti).

Canopy bed

The German word for canopy bed is “Himmelbett” (from Early New High German You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view." *). Literally translated, this means "heaven - bed". So the cloud-like end of the “curtain” in the VMS makes sense here, at least in German. It would amount to something like a heavenly canopy. I don't know if there is a connection between “canopy” and “ heaven” in other languages.

*Example: "ein gehimelt bettlade", engl. "bed frame, provided with a canopy"
