In Eastern Christian monasticism, the connection between hesychasm (the mystical tradition of inner stillness) and nudity is understood not in a modern naturist sense, but through a profound symbolic, ascetic, and theological lens.In the hesychast tradition, the concept of nudity manifests in three primary dimensions:1. Radical Desert Asceticism (The Boskoi)During the formation of early monasticism (which heavily influenced 14th-century hesychasm), certain desert hermits known as boskoi (the grazers) lived entirely without clothing in the wilderness.Stripping Society: Shedding clothes symbolized a total rejection of human civilization, social status, and worldly comfort.Return to Edenic Innocence: By achieving extreme purity of heart (apatheia), these ascetics reportedly lost the shame associated with sin. Famous hagiographies, such as those of St. Mary of Egypt or St. Onuphrius, describe how their physical nudity was eventually covered only by their miraculously long hair.2. Theological Meaning: Shedding the "Garments of Skin"Eastern Orthodox theology, systematized for hesychasm by St. Gregory Palamas, views the "garments of skin" (Genesis 3:21) given to Adam and Eva after the Fall as symbols of our mortality, vulnerability, and fallen biological nature.Metaphorical Nakedness: The goal of hesychast prayer (the unceasing Jesus Prayer) is to strip away these metaphorical garments.Naked Before God: The practitioner aims to become completely "naked" from worldly thoughts (logismoi), passions, and mental images. Only in this state of absolute inner poverty can a person be re-clothed in the uncreated divine light (Tabor Light) and achieve divinization (theosis).3. The Body as a Temple and Baptismal ImageryUnlike some Western medieval movements that viewed the body merely as a prison for the soul, hesychasm integrates the physical body directly into prayer through breathing techniques and physical postures.Baptismal Nakedness: Total physical nudity is historically tied to adult baptism, representing the candidate entering the font as a new creation, naked and unashamed like Adam before the Fall.Transfigured Vision: Through a purified mind (nous), the hesychast no longer views the naked body through a lens of lust or shame, but sees it as a holy temple capable of being transfigured by God's grace. If possible, I would greatly appreciate a link to the exact sources of these images when you can. Or alternatively a manuscript title or folio number. It's important for discussing the likelihood of a connection with the VMS and the validity of your claims. I did manage to find the page for the "no bathtub" on the Princeton website, You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.. The full manuscript is actually on gallica You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. (good luck searching this one by title!). This happens to be relevant, as that specific illustration/manuscript is dated (by gallica) to between 1600-1799AD. The story it is depicting also has its You are not allowed to view links. It is notable that none of the other manuscripts depict the leper as seemingly contained in something; they tend to simply show them in robes. RE: Voynich is encrypted ENOCH - Radim Dobeš - 20-05-2026 The Bishop with Leprosy This painting (also called an illumination) appears in a manuscript likely made in Gondar, Western Ethiopia, and dated to 1700-1799. You can view this painting in the manuscript Bibliothèque nationale de France, Ethiopien d'Abbadie Collection, Manuscript No. 114, f. 58v, s. 118, or learn more about this manuscript at its PEMM Manuscript page. You can also read the related story at its PEMM Story page. RE: Voynich is encrypted ENOCH - Stefan Wirtz_2 - 20-05-2026 Being 300 years younger, this has clearly nothing to do with VMS. You made a „clever cut“ and left out the lower part of lepra bishop‘s clothing to give the impression of a „tub“ upper part — in full sight, it is clearly a coat or something. All other ethiopian comparisons show not any similarities, the african sources are again at least 200 years younger than VMS. So what is this all about? Stefan makes the same point I wanted to make: If these images are from 1600-1800, and is not based on older imagery, how can it be relevant to the VMS? At the beginning of 2026 it was claimed here that it could not have been known at that time and today I have already listed several sources of information that admit that it could have been available. Another answer is that it is necessary to revise the current date of origin of the VM. And another possibility is that this picture is not the only one. Many manuscripts are still in private collections. I recently discovered at auction the first and second books of Enoch in the Ethiopian language from 1450. You are very quickly done with everything and that is a shame. RE: Voynich is encrypted ENOCH - Radim Dobeš - 20-05-2026 In the Ethiopian manuscripts, unspecified plants are used in various parables. RE: Voynich is encrypted ENOCH - Radim Dobeš - 20-05-2026 Another one of the plants in the Ethiopian manuscript. It's a new find so I'm just posting it here with the relevant citations, I'll work on it gradually, please be patient. You are very quickly done with everything and that is a shame. I am not done with everything, I am simply trying to validate what you are claiming and checking whether it makes sense. In order for this to be discussed, there needs to be a clear idea of what your theory is. The issue currently is that there isn't a coherent/consistent view for where, when and how the VMS can be the book of enoch. If you are claiming that the "bathtub" in the ethiopian manuscript is the same as what is depicted in the VMS, you have to also explain how that can reasonably be the case. Perhaps the 1700AD example is a copy from an older book from the 15th century, but there is no evidence of that. Perhaps the VMS was a far later copy of the 1700AD image, which means that you need a plausible story that explains why 15th century parchment was used in the 18th century. Just like every other theory on this forum, these types of questions aren't meant to disprove your theory, but to actually clarify it (if you have the answers). If you currently do not know the answer yet, that is completely fine, but in that case it would be wiser to bring up the possibility of a connection instead of stating that they are connected. RE: Voynich is encrypted ENOCH - rikforto - 20-05-2026 I might regret wading into this, but is the match here based on something besides the purported similarity of the art? Set aside if it is a good identification; I'm asking if there are confirmatory lines of evidence. |
