In Kabbalistic tradition, Jacob’s ladder is a profound metaphor for the soul's journey, focusing on purification, elevating consciousness from the physical to the spiritual, and the mechanism of prayer.
The Seven Steps of Ascent
Malkhut (Kingdom/Grounding): The foot of the ladder resting on Earth, representing the physical world, ego, and the initial need for humility, grounding, and personal purification (associated with the Moon or the Sefirah Malkhut).
Yesod (Foundation/Connection): The stage of emotional awakening, education, and the refinement of desires and communication with the Creator (associated with Mercury or Yesod).
Hod (Splendor/Surrender): A step characterized by gratitude, humility, and acknowledging truth. It is the surrender of ego and the "thanksgiving" for the divine process (associated with Venus or Hod).
Netzach (Victory/Endurance): The struggle for spiritual victory, enduring challenges, and overcoming our inner darkness with light and persistence (associated with the Sun or Netzach).
Tiferet (Beauty/Harmony): The balance between mercy and severity, representing the beauty of a balanced life, and the unification of compassion with divine truth (associated with Mars or Tiferet).
Gevurah (Severity/Strength): Intellectual maturity, judgment, and the discipline needed for self-restraint and the "fight against ignorance" (associated with Jupiter or Gevurah).
Chesed (Kindness/Divine Love): The highest step before reaching the divine realm of Binah/Chokhmah, representing loving-kindness, perfect balance, and the culmination of wisdom (associated with Saturn or Chesed).
2 Enoch [Longer recension, ms. J],(tr. F. Andersen)
27. |About how God founded the water, and surrounded it with light, and established on it seven islands. Word “26.”|
“And I gave the command: ‘Let there be taken some of the light and
some of the darkness.’ •And I said, ‘Become thickened, and be wrapped around with light!’ And I spread it out, and it became water. And I
spread it out above the darkness, below the light. •And thus I made the solid waters, that is to say, the Bottomless. And I made a foundation of light around the water. And I created seven great circles inside it, and I gave them an appearance of crystal, wet and dry, that is to say glass and ice, and to be the circuit for water and the other elements. And I pointed out to each one |of them| his route, to the seven stars, each one of them in his own heaven, so that they might travel accordingly.
And I saw how good it was. •And I made a division between the light and between the darkness, that is to say, in the middle of the waters, this way and that way. And I said to the light that it should be day, and to the darkness 〈I commanded〉 that it should be night. And evening came, and 〈again〉 morning came, 〈that is〉 the first day.
Comments:
The concept of the Seven Planetary Spheres (or Seven Heavens) refers to the classical geocentric model of the universe used from antiquity through the Middle Ages.
This system aligns perfectly with the mystical interpretation of Jacob’s Ladder, where each rung represents a transition through one of these celestial realms.

Weird that they would imagine winged angels using a stair or ladder.

On other hand, it is even weirder that they believed that angels needed wings to fly...

All the best, --stolfi

it is clothing taken off the shoulders. But it is not important what it is. It is again a parable and the important thing is the pattern on the clothing, which geometrically corresponds to the position of the passing line. Another important layer is again the message from the Book of Enoch about the necessity of observing the heavenly laws. I have more of these matches, but it will take me a while to publish it.

Sorry for a bit offtopic but angels are a kind of my geek interest  Wink

Most angels in the Bible actually don't have wings, that is there is no mention of wings in their descriptions. Take angels who come to Abraham, archangel Gabriel who comes to Mary or angels that appear after Jesus going to Heaven. They are described simply as "men", sometimes in shining white robes, but we know they are not ordinary men but messengers of God.

Then there are creatures like Seraphim and Cherubim who indeed have wings. The Bible never calls them "angels" (malachim) but the later interpretations do so.
Seraphim and Cherubim in the Bible are incredibly powerful, they never contact personally with people which is done by lesser angels. They deal with cosmic scale stuff.

And there are yet truly "weirdos" like Ophanim: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.

Winged "ordinary" angels are a later creation, possibly inspired by Greek and Roman goddesses - Nike and Victoria.

In the conlusion: the writers of the Book of Genesis possibly thought of wingless angels on Jacob's ladder which explains why they had to walk the ladder Wink Wings were added later in sacral art.

They may not have described angels as having wings, but they frequently depicted them with wings.

The author of the Voynich manuscript replaced the visual appearance of angels, planets, saints, people, etc. with the uniform appearance of a naked woman. He did not want it to be obvious at first glance what scenes were involved. That is why the angels here do not have wings. The angelic hierarchy is described in several places in the Book of Enoch. During Enoch's journey through the ten heavens, these beings and their functions are described.

Nude adult women depicted as angels are not part of the mainstream of Christian iconography and are virtually nonexistent prior to 1800.

Addition of information to the previous post with reference to the source of the illustrations
Ethiopian liturgical poetry (known as Qene) and hymns use rich, mystical metaphors to symbolize Mary’s role in salvation:The Living Ark of the Covenant (Tabot): The Ark of the Covenant is the most sacred object in Ethiopian Christianity. Mary is symbolized as the "Living Ark" because she carried the Divine Word (Jesus) inside her womb. The Ladder of Jacob: She symbolizes the spiritual bridge connecting heaven and earth, allowing humanity to ascend back to God.The Burning Bush: Like the bush that burned but was not consumed by fire, Mary carried the divine fire of God within her without being harmed.
